Located in the western of Tibet, among Tanggula Mountains, Nyenchen Tanggula Mounytains and Gangdise Mountains, Naqu is about 1156 kilometers long from east to west and about 760 kilometers wide from south to north and with an total area of 369674 square kilometers. Naqu is the largest prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region. And lakes are scattered in its area. More than 4500 meters above seal level, Naqu is cold, anoxic and dry. There is about 100 high wind days all year, more than 2886 sunshine hours, 2.1 degrees below zero of annual average temperature and the coldest degree can reach minus 30 to 40 degrees. With annual rainfall of more than 400 mm, May to September is relatively warm during the year. More counties in Naqu are focused on animal husbandry and several counties are focused on semi-pasturing and semi-agriculture. There are Qinghai-Tibet Railway, 109 National Highway (Golmud-Lhasa), Naqu-Changdu Highway, Naqu-Shiquanhe Highway through the prefecture. Naqu was called “black river” for Naqu River, the upper reaches of Nujiang River, flowing through the area. Naqu is meaning black river in Tibetan. As a large scale traditional festival on North Tibet Grassland, Naqu Horse Racing continues from Trisong Detsen period of Tubo Dynasty to now and is celebrated from August 10 of Gregorian calendar every year and lasts about one week.
